What is a Book Review?

A book review is an honest opinion about a book. It gives the reader insight into what the writer thought of the book, and why they feel that way. It's important to provide some background information on the type of work it is, including who published it. The point is not to give everything away; just enough so that readers will know whether they want to read it or not.

How Does a Book Review Differ from a Movie Review?

The main difference between a book review and a movie review is that one is written after reading something, and the other is done after viewing something. The way the film industry works, you're able to see previews of movies before going into the theater. When you read the book, however, there are no preconceived images or thoughts about how things should be.

How to Write an Outstanding Book Review?

If you want to write a great review for Amazon, keep these points in mind:

1.      Use lots of adjectives and adverbs to describe what happened in the book.

2.      Include information about the characters in the book, and even which ones you liked best.

3.      Discuss what parts of the story were your favorite, including what you think about how it ended.

4.      Putting in a little bit of background on when or where something took place adds to your credibility as a writer and reviewer.

5.      Point out the strengths and weaknesses of the book to show that you're being honest.

6.      Recommend it to other potential readers, based on your personal opinion.

7.      Mentioning other books by the same author tells people they might want to pick those up as well, or avoid them altogether if you didn't like them.

8.      Just remember to keep your review well-written and free of errors in grammar or spelling!

How do I write a book review?

A book review is a bit different from a regular essay. It's more of your personal feelings about the book, and less about what you learned from it. First, start by reading and taking notes on the major points in the book so that you don't miss anything important.

After finishing the book:

1.      Keep a journal on the side that has your thoughts, feelings and opinions on the book.

2.      Don't go back and edit what you've already written in the notes.

3.      Read your notes one more time before writing your review, so it's fresh in your head when you start writing everything else down.

4.      Create an outline of each important point in the book with quotes from it.

5.      Write an introductory paragraph that tells people what the book is about, who published it, and when it was written.

6.      Use your outline to write paragraphs that talk about each main point in the book.

7.      Add one more paragraph that discusses your overall thoughts on the book, and whether you recommend it.

8.      Proofread your review for spelling or grammar errors before you submit it!

What about the Rating system?

If you're writing a review on Amazon, use the same rating system that they do to give people an idea of what your thoughts are. Here's how it works:

5-star - I loved it!

4-star - It was good, but not great.

3-star - I'm glad I read it, but it wasn't really for me.

2-star - It was just okay in my opinion.

1-star - I didn't like this book at all. Not recommended to others.

What's the best way to write a book review?

It's important to remember that there are no right or wrong answers when writing a book review. It's all personal opinion, so the best way to write one is in your own words. Make it interesting and engaging, even if you didn't like the book in the end!

What are some common mistakes people make when writing a review?

There are a few things that people usually forget to include in their reviews.

1.      Include your thoughts on why you're recommending or not recommending the book to other readers.

2.      Avoid writing spoilers, unless it's necessary for the review. This includes revealing any plot twists or endings, which can ruin it for those who haven't read the book yet.

3.      Don't make it too long or too short; try to stick around 300-500 words each time.

4.      Make sure you're writing for the right audience; don't write a review about how much you liked a children's picture book if it was meant for teenagers!

5.      Remember that every reviewer is different; not everyone will agree with what you write.

Book Review Example: Ratatouille by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures:

Exposition: The story starts out in Paris, France and talks about a little rat named Remy who lives under the floorboards of an old lady's house. He is really interested in cooking and wants to be a chef when he grows up. He also discovers that he is the only rat in the world who thinks and acts human. We find out that Remy has a brother named Emile who is more into being a regular old rat, going on midnight food hunts in the city streets. Conflict: Remy's dad doesn't want him going outside because he is afraid that Remy's differences will lead to his death. Remy wants to prove him wrong, though and sets out on an adventure in the streets of Paris one night with his brother. The boys get chased by a cat, which leads them back to their hole in the wall... only they can't seem to find it! They end up getting caught by the old lady who lives in their house. When Remy finally escapes, he makes it his life mission to learn how to cook so that he can prove to everyone back home that he is someone worth following. Climax: Remy sneaks out of his room at night and tries his first dish-- an onion soup! He loves it and decides to keep going. His first few dishes don't turn out so well, but he finally learns how to make a good soup and it's delicious! He rushes back home with Donovan (the leader of Remy's clan) and gives him the dish as well as his journal entry that explains what happened. Resolution: By now Remy has discovered that he can communicate with other animals through a secret language, and he uses his skills to convince the old lady's chef to teach him how to cook. He manages to become a great cook by working under Linguini, who is one of the top chefs in Paris. In the end Remy becomes known as someone who saved Gusteau's restaurant from closing down and the whole town thinks the recipes come from Linguini, but really it's Remy.

The Ratatouille movie is a great film that you can watch with your family if you haven't seen it already! It's about a rat who becomes a famous chef in Paris by using his culinary skills to help others. The book's version is just as good, and you get to learn more about Remy and how he came to be so talented in the kitchen. If you enjoyed watching the movie or if you like cooking, then I think this book would be a great choice for you!

What is a good book review?

A good book review should inform the reader about what your opinion is on a certain book. You can choose a specific part of a book or you can talk in general about the entire thing. For example, you may want to describe who the characters are and why they're important in the story. Or, you could discuss what you liked and disliked about the book. Every review should have some sort of opinion, so remember to be honest when writing yours!

How do you write a good book review?

Writing a book review is not too difficult and there are many steps you can take to make sure the outcome is perfect. Here are some things to keep in mind:

1.      Make a pros and cons list.

2.      Decide on a rating for the book (ex: 3 stars)

3.      Write your review in an organized fashion, using correct punctuation and grammar.

4.      Try to include the most important information from the book without giving away spoilers.

5.      Be sure to check your work for any mistakes before publishing.

What is your opinion on the book?

Every good book review should have an opinion, so make sure to be critical when talking about something you loved or hated. Talk about whether or not you liked how the author wrote certain things and what you were hoping would happen in the story (and didn't). You can also talk about your favorite and least favorite parts and why you either liked or disliked them. The information you include in the review should be specific, so that the reader knows exactly what you're talking about.

Example:

In this example, you could switch things up by writing a paragraph about every aspect of the book- what you liked and didn't like.

Book:

By now Remy has discovered that he can communicate with other animals through a secret language, and he uses his skills to convince the old lady's chef to teach him how to cook. He manages to become a great cook by working under Linguini, who is one of the top chefs in Paris. In the end Remy becomes known as someone who saved Gusteau's restaurant from closing down and the whole town thinks the recipes come from Linguini, but really it's Remy.

Pros:

I liked how Remy was able to use his skills to help him become a better cook and save Gusteau's restaurant from closing down.

Cons:

I didn't like how all the recipes came from Linguini instead of Remy, even though it was a great way to save the restaurant and still have people think that he wasn't a great cook. I also would have liked to see more action in the story because this book was for younger children.

3 stars.

I gave this book 3 stars because while it was an interesting story, I would have liked to see Remy in more action and the ending could have been better. It was a good read for younger kids, though!

Ratatouille is about Remy, who discovers that he can communicate with other animals through a secret language, and as a result becomes a great cook. The book review explains what the book is about and talks about whether or not the reader likes it. It includes details from the story that show why the writer doesn't like the ending and why they think this would be great for younger children.

What are the 4 stages of book review?

1.      Introduction

2.      Body

3.      Conclusion

4.      Evaluation/ Recommendation
